We do the part of grief nobody wants to do.

Death Cleanup was founded in 2009 by a former first-responder paramedic who kept noticing the same thing on every scene: after the medics, the police and the funeral home all leave, somebody still has to clean up. And whoever was left was usually the family. We started with one van. We now operate a certified bio-recovery network across all fifty states.

Our story

Fifteen years ago our founder ran a 911 call to a residence in suburban Long Island. The patient had passed several days earlier and the family had just discovered him. By protocol, EMS pronounces, the medical examiner takes over, the body leaves with the funeral home — and that is the end of the medical involvement. What is left in the room is for the family.

Watching that family stand in their front yard at 2 a.m. with no idea what to do next, our founder went home, looked up what bio-recovery actually involved, and began the slow process of becoming someone the next family could call. He earned IICRC certification. He bought OSHA-compliant PPE and the regulated waste accounts to dispose of it correctly. He bought a used van and painted over the markings. And the next time the dispatcher knew of a similar scene, he gave the family his number.

We are now over a hundred technicians across more than thirty operating regions. We answer the phone in under twelve seconds. We bill insurance. We do not look at the scene with anything other than the same care we would want for our own.

Our equipment, briefly

The work requires the right equipment used the right way. We do not improvise.

What we believe

1. The work is technical. The approach is human. The science is the easy part. The harder part is being someone the family is glad they called.

2. We do not sell emergency. We sell after. After the police, after the coroner, after the family has gone home. Our job is to make the room a room again.

3. We are a phone call, not a sales funnel. Most calls are answered by a technician, not a salesperson. There is no quote process — there is a written estimate after we have seen the scene, and an invoice your insurance carrier handles directly.

4. We do not photograph beyond what billing requires. Every photo we take is sealed to your file. We do not have a marketing folder of scenes. We do not talk about specifics outside the team that worked the call.

5. We do not judge. Hoarding, suicide, addiction, accident, age — we have seen all of it. The work is the work; what surrounded the death is none of our business beyond what is required for safe remediation.
