Explaining Suicide

When I look back at the many suicide acts that I have cleaned up I see that the cleanup came easy. Explaining suicides became a hobby of mine when I realized no one explanation would do for all suicides. My third year of college I read Emile Durkheim's book, Suicide, and I got something out of it, but what I got barely stuck to my sticking place.

I learned that statistics tells us more about suicide than the psychological studies, alone. Although, psychology has given some indications about what goes on in a suicidal person's thinking.

Now that I look at suicide as a special interest, I come slowly to grip the fact that most suicides, worldwide, occur among white males. This fact alone perked my interest in death by suicide to new heights. Further study revealed that in the USA for the year 2001, 750,000 suicide attempts, or about 2,00 a day were attempted. This comes to about 85 per hour.

Attempting suicide and succeeding at suicide are two greatly different acts. Attempts become successes with practices where the suicidal mindset remains or returns. For every suicide, there are about 25 attempted suicides.

Worldwide there are about one million suicides each year, which means there are around twenty-five million attempts. When we consider that over seventy percent of these suicides and attempts involve white males, we get a hint of something very strange and difficult to figure out.
