A note on death: Death has a socially defined beginning and ending. The end of the death process may be sudden or prolonged. When prolonged, those around the dying person will help to define that death has begun.

In the United States and other English speaking countries, we tend to see death as a sudden end. In actuality, many times, the process may begin months before the final moments. Death is a process in such cases.

The deceased may leave behind physical signs of their mental and physical decay, even though they carryon conversations and appear to be "getting by." We are surprised at their death, at times, and wonder how we could have done something to help.

Understanding the death process is different for every culture. Our culture looks more to the youthful, thriving among us rather than those of us who have lived more of our lives than we have left time to live.

Sudden death brings a golden pearl to some of us because of a debilitating disease that would otherwise cause much pain and sufferiing. Sometimes sudden death catches us before we make preparations for those surviving us. We know that the older population thinks of terms of acting for posterity, which the younger population thinks about ego-satisfying appearance among peers, employeers, and strangers too.

Earlier on this page I commented on sudden death's benefits for those about to undergo unrelenting pain and agony. I say, "death's benefits" in the sense that without hope to end suffering, without hope of relief from great pain, life's preservation prevents all that the deceased would have hoped to live for anyway.

Justifications for suicide often take the above line of reasoning when grave illness arises without hope of curing. Even in these cases some in our society deny the suffering a way out of a life condemned to pain and suffering.

White males over 70 have a greater risk of suicide than any other group. The general attitude toward geriatric suicide finds greater acceptance among the US population. Among the elderly, there are 4 suicide attempts for every suicide; for the general population the numbers come to 10 attempts for every suicide.

Suicide among Christians lead to a belief in martyrdom as a way to copy Christ's sacrifice. In the fifth century, St. Augustine changed the Christian belief toward suicide. "Thou shalt not kill" became the aa commandment for one's self as well as humanity. The midlevel church then followed with sanctions against suicide.

Church burials were forbidden. Property of the suicide victim seized by the state left families without property. Original sin and just war became part of the Christian orthodoxy's catalogue for right thinking.

We will never know how many lives were saved as a result of St. Augustine's writings. We do know that fewer catholics than protestants commit suicide; we know that more Irish and Norwegians commit suicide than Italians commit suicide. So religious convictions play some role in preventing suicide.

In the case of the elderly living in satisfactory physical health, bu suffering from remediable depression, medication therapy provides a way out of their depressive state.
